Objective measures of learning gains in college classes can be achieved by analyzing student assessments.  In particular, we analyze pre-post data from large introductory classes in astronomy and physics here at Penn State.  Moving beyond looking at the overall change in the class average, we can identify patterns of learning gains across the semester. We can also evaluate the measurement properties of these assessments in comparison with the standard midterms and exams used for grading purposes.
