If you have asked yourself these questions, this workshop is for you:

What does pedagogical and cognitive psychology research tell us about how learning works and how to promote learning? What are the most effective things that STUDENTS can do to learn?  How can I as an instructor get them to do it?  How are other ECoS faculty getting them to do it?

Learning Assistants: An important conduit to instructor feedback.

If you have asked yourself these questions, this workshop is for you:

I have heard of LAs but what do they do?  How do instructors use LAs to improve their courses?

Abstract: Learning Assistants (LAs) can help faculty engage students, bridge the gap between novice and expert, explore complex ideas, and promote collaboration in the classroom. However, none of this is possible without adequate planning and time investment by the faculty.  The Biology Department began using LAs in 2011, and have integrated them into both large lecture courses and small laboratory sections. We will discuss four essential components for using LAs: recruitment, training, integration into the curriculum, and assessment. Most importantly, we will share why we are willing to make the effort.

Presented by: Jennelle Malcos, Instructor in the Department of Biology, and John Waters, Lab Coordinator for the Department of Biology
