Over the past two years, the CESE has supported the launch of a peer-mentor program modeled after the very successful Learning Assistant Program at University Colorado, Boulder, (http://laprogram.colorado.edu/).  In this model of peer-led facilitation of learning, undergraduates become a part of the instructional core of a course and assist in building small learning communities in large classrooms thus allowing for more productive participation in active learning activities such as clicker questions and group work.  The effective utilization of Learning Assistants to build learning communities requires retooling of curriculum and also an understanding of the role of peer facilitators in the classroom.  The University of Colorado Boulder model has shown that both the students in the class and the LAs experience measurable learning gains.  Recent survey results from ECoS classes have indicated that the use of LAs has facilitated collaboration in the classroom as well as the formation of study groups outside the formal instruction period.  Anyone considering the use of LAs in their classroom should attend this introductory workshop to learn how ECoS faculty are using LAs in their classrooms and what the instructor needs to do to effectively utilize peer leaders in their courses.
